Habitat: Locally, in depression swamps in both the Triassic Basin and inner Coastal Plain. This species can occur on highly acidic or calcareous soil.
Characteristics: Clonal, capable of forming dense patches; Perigynia typically glaucous with dark scales
NOTE: Local material can be difficult to identify with botanical keys. Resources indicate that the terminal spikes should be gynandrous – with perigynia occurring above staminate flowers. However, local populations regularly produce culms with terminal spikes that are entirely staminate or have staminate flowers at both the base and apex.
