Habitat: Observed locally in open woodlands and clearings on mafic soils that may be seasonally wet.

Characteristics: Stongly glaucous; Spreads by elongate rhizomes, forming loose open colonies rather than dense patches.

Rigid Sedge (Carex tetanica)

Habitat: In Virginia, this species occurs primarily in calcium rich wetlands such as fens in the western counties and in shell-marl wetlands in the southern Coastal Plain. In Fairfax County, this species is currently known from a single depression swamp that may be influenced by calcium-rich marine clays.

Characteristics: Clonal species, the locally-observed population forming small, dense patches
