Only one species in Section Deweyanae has been documented in Virginia – Carex bromoides. However, two subspecies are known to occur within the Commonwealth; ssp. montana which occurs in the far western portion of the state, and ssp. bromoides which is fairly widespread.

Habitat: Seepage swamp, alluvial swamps, tidal swamps

Characteristics: Densely to loosely cespitose; basal sheaths fibrous, front face of sheaths membranous; inflorescence racemose with 2-7 spikes; spikes usually gynecandrous, but pistillate and/or staminate spikes may also occur; perigynia 4-6 x 0.7-1.3 mm, lanceolate and spongy-thickened at the base.
